Events on Pikes Peak

"Mister I had to win, I was broke," stated the first Penrose Trophy winner. Rea Lentz from Spokane, Washington, beat all the fancy factory sponsored cars driving his home built Romano Demon racer powered by a 125 HP V-8 402 cid Curtis airplane engine with a time of 20:55.40 minutes.

In 1994 New Zealander Rod Millen, driving a Toyota Celica, set a record of 10:04.06 minutes - less than half of Lentz's 1916 time.

The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is the second oldest sanctioned race in the United States. (Indianapolis 500 is the oldest.)

AdAmAn Club

The AdAmAn Club began on December 31, 1922, when a group of cold, courageous men, better known as "the frozen five," climbed through snowdrifts, ice and wind to reach the summit of Pikes Peak. Gathered around the pot-belly stove in the old stone summit house they waited for midnight to set off a few flares and a bonfire to celebrate the New Year. Every year the group has added a man or woman to join in the vigorous climb. Their outstanding fireworks display set off from the summit at midnight can be seen for more than 125 miles on a clear night.
